Ensconced

9”x12”, serigraph, water based ink on cotton paper, 2022

Ensconced by sea and night. It could be interpreted that she is emerging from the water, powerful and mystical. Or she could be drowning, which is more true to the artist’s intent. The unknown prospects of her family member’s future due to mental illness has left her feeling powerless. The personal meaning of the piece is an expression of anger and frustration over events that she is helpless to change. The sea and night envelop her, hiding her from the realities of this summer.

To depict this scene, color choices of blue and yellow are to portray midnight water, golden blonde hair, sparkling stars, and the ambiance of the night sky & moon. A deckled edge supports the movement of the water. While to the artist this piece represents difficulty, it is visually still playful and can be interpreted from a place of power.
